Baby Bomber Sunday

I had a pretty decent Fourth Of July Weekend this year. It included going to the Staten Island Yankee game on Sunday with my friend Saundra.  The SI Yanks played host to the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox Class A Affiliate.

This was my second trip out to Staten Island. Last year, when switch pitcher Pat Venditte was on the team, I travelled out to Staten Island to see the Baby Bombers play the Washington Nationals Class A team, whose name I no longer remember. I do recall that the Baby Nats (if I may be so bold) had a player named Tyler Moore, and whenever he came up to bat, the SI Yanks PA system played the theme from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Hilarious!

Anyway, at Sunday's game, the big player on the Spinners seemed to be Derek Gibson. I saw fans in the stands wearing his jersey, and Saundra and I wondered if they'd come all the way from Massachussets to Staten Island just to see him. We never found out, but we did enjoy seeing Staten Island's Neil Medchill hit a home run and his teammate, Zoilo Almonte make a spectacular catch out in right field. After trailing early, 1-0, the Baby Bombers went on to win the game, 7-4.

That was first game I attended this year. I still haven't seen the new Yankee Stadium and I don't know if I will this year, but I feel pretty confident that I'll get back out to Staten Island again, and that doesn't bother me a bit!
